Why Is My Engine Knocking?

Most modern engines run quietly and very efficiently. They run so well that you often overlook basic
maintenance services
and other issues that can lead to engine knocking. An aggravating car engine knocking noise can be very upsetting. Fortunately, the cure does not have to be expensive. Oftentimes, it is something simple that our certified technicians at United Tire can cure with a thorough diagnosis and engine service.
Commons Causes of Car Engine Knocking
Car engine knocking occurs for many reasons. The most likely is when you use lower octane fuel in modern engines. Current engines
often have high compression ratios and computerized fuel injection systems that are very sensitive to the type of fuel used.
When a car manufacturer advises using higher octane fuel and you choose to cut costs with regular unleaded, your car engine might rebel. Instead of burning fuel cleanly and efficiently, the lower-grade fuel delivers less power and more exhaust that causes problems under the hood. A tune-up and using recommended fuel is a simple cure.
Ignoring Common Car Care Does Not Help
You need to maintain the engine to ensure it runs its best. If you skip
engine tune-ups
and let the air filter get clogged with dirt, your engine might start knocking. The same goes for a clogged fuel filter that sends either too little fuel or unclean fuel to the fuel injectors.
You also might find the alternator is not sending enough power to your motor. If the plugs are working at less than ideal capacity due to reduced electrical power, your car engine might rebel. A recurring knocking could be the problem—especially when accelerating. Regular car care helps to ensure that will not happen.
Bigger Problems Might Persist
Sometimes, that engine knocking sound is a bigger problem than bad gas or needing a tune-up. If your car ever ran
l
ow on oil
or coolant and the engine overheated, you might have bad wrist pins on connecting rods that became bent due to heat. One or more bad valves also might cause an engine knock. You might have other underlying mechanical issues that cause the knocking sound. Fortunately, those are relatively rare. When such problems do arise, costly repairs typically are in order. You also might need to replace it. We can help you decide the proper course of action.
